Within these devices lie micro switch contact that can let the operator remove the key from the ignition while the shift lever is outside the Park position. If the operator removes the key and the attempts to park without the vehicle’s shifter in park, the vehicle can roll away, increasing crash and injury risk.

This defect throws the affected vehicles out of compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards regarding theft protection and rollaway prevention.

Volkswagen hasn’t yet provided a detailed recall chronology at this time.

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin September 8, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 37L5. Concerned consumers can also visit the NHTSA’s website and enter their VIN to see if their vehicle is included in any recalls.

Your vehicle’s manufacturer is legally required to fix any recalled problems for free. If the dealership refuses to fix the part or tries to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately. The Highway Safety Act of 1970, which created the NHTSA, requires car manufacturers to pay for the recall and replacement of a defective part.
